A practical, skill-first walk through the dysgraphia supplement: what connects to dysgraphia, what to test and pull, how to document it whether or not a student qualifies, and what's realistic at different ages. What this tool is for

Built for the evaluator staring at a dysgraphia referral for the first time, unsure what data earns a place in the supplement versus what's interesting but beside the point. It walks the territory in five passes: what connects, what to test, how to write it up either way, when timing itself needs a judgment call, and where it all lands on the actual form.

A note on tool names: everything in this reference is organized by skill, not by battery. Multiple tools measure the same construct under different names β€” a norm-referenced instrument, an OT motor assessment, or an informal writing sample can all populate the same supplement row. Where you'll see specific instrument names is on the Dysgraphia Reference page. This page tells you what to test and why it matters; it deliberately doesn't tell you which tool to use to get there.
Language note: educational language throughout, consistent with hub conventions β€” "educational impact," not "clinical presentation." Dysgraphia is identified for special education purposes as a pattern of educational need, not diagnosed as a medical condition.
Where this fits: unlike some SLD categories, dysgraphia identification doesn't converge on a single construct β€” it asks which of two distinct mechanisms (graphomotor or orthographic, or both) explains illegible and/or inefficient handwriting, and whether that pattern is unexpected for the student's age and instruction. The two-pathway map

Dysgraphia isn't identified from a single deficit. It's identified from one of two distinct mechanisms β€” sometimes both β€” converging on illegible and/or inefficient handwriting that a student's broader ability and instruction don't explain.

Pathway 1 β€” Graphomotor

Motor Planning & Execution GvFine muscle control, visual perception, and motor planning required to physically form letters. The core of the motor pathway β€” impaired here means the hand itself struggles to execute the letter, regardless of whether the student knows what it should look like.
Writing Automaticity GsSpeed and consistency of letter production under normal demands. Slow, labored, effortful production even on over-learned letters is a graphomotor signature.
Visual-Motor Integration GvCoordinating what the eye sees with what the hand produces. Explains baseline drift, inconsistent sizing, and poor spacing that persist regardless of how well the student knows the letter.

Pathway 2 β€” Orthographic

Orthographic Processing Glr GrwStoring and retrieving letter forms and letter sequences from long-term memory. The student knows what a word sounds like but can't reliably retrieve how to form or spell it β€” the defining orthographic signature.
Verbal / Working Memory GwmHolding letter sequences and spelling patterns in mind while writing. Often the first system to visibly collapse under transcription overload β€” usually secondary, not the primary deficit.
Oral Language & Vocabulary GcIdeas, vocabulary, and verbal reasoning generated independent of transcription. Typically a relative strength β€” the oral-vs-written composition discrepancy (strong ideas spoken, sparse ideas written) is what makes the pattern "unexpected."

Gv/Gs and Glr/Grw are easy to blur together in casual conversation but represent different mechanisms in the supplement β€” one is motor execution, the other is memory retrieval. A student can have either, or both; keep the distinction explicit in the write-up because it drives different service recommendations (OT vs. structured literacy).

What to test & pull

Not everything you administer carries equal weight in the supplement. Here's what each skill does for the write-up and what commonly pulls into it β€” named by what it measures, not by the instrument you use to measure it.

Graphomotor Function

Motor planning and execution of letter production β€” pencil grip, posture, baseline adherence, letter sizing, spacing, and production speed. This is the construct Pathway 1 is built around.

Not a norm-referenced score β€” a clinical comparison. Ask the student to copy a sentence from a model, then write a dictated sentence, and compare quality. This single comparison does more differentiating work than any single subtest.

Spelling Error-Pattern Analysis

Analyze unedited spelling errors by type: orthographic (wrong letter sequence, right sound), phonological (sound structure not preserved), letter-formation (right attempt, illegible execution), or morphological (prefix/suffix/base word). The pattern differentiates dysgraphia from a dyslexia or DLD profile.

Working Memory / Executive Function

When transcription isn't automatic, working memory is often the first system to visibly collapse β€” usually a secondary effect, not the primary deficit. The key question: does the apparent WM/attention weakness resolve when transcription demands are removed (typing, scribe, dictation)?

Oral Language & Vocabulary

This is what makes the pattern "unexpected" rather than "generally low." A student with age-appropriate ideas and vocabulary spoken aloud, paired with a specific transcription weakness, is the textbook unexpected pattern.

Documenting both outcomes

A supplement that only answers "yes" or "no" wastes the data you just gathered. Both outcomes deserve a full explanation β€” the parent, the teacher, and the OT all need to know why, not just what.

When the pattern is present

  • Name the specific data points that show the deficit β€” cite scores and the Copy vs. Dictation result, don't just assert the conclusion.
  • State which pathway (or both) is implicated, and address each separately β€” the instructional implications differ (OT-targeted motor patterning vs. structured literacy with orthographic mapping).
  • Connect the pattern to educational impact in the actual classroom β€” this is what makes the eligibility determination usable, not just technically correct.
  • If a co-occurring condition is present (e.g., ADHD, ASD, ID), document that the writing-specific deficit exceeds what the co-occurring condition alone would predict.

When the pattern is not present

  • Say what the data did show, not only that dysgraphia characteristics were absent β€” a bare "no" gives the ARD committee nothing to act on.
  • If handwriting legibility and rate are within normal limits but spelling or written expression is weak, name that pattern explicitly β€” it points toward a different kind of need, not standalone dysgraphia.
  • If writing difficulties are explained by a broader condition (ID, ASD, DCD, or a medical/neurological cause), name that exclusionary factor rather than leaving it implicit.
  • If scores are simply within range, say so plainly and note what continued monitoring, if any, is appropriate.
Age & timing

Parents have the right to request a full evaluation at any time β€” that right isn't gated by a student's age or how much writing instruction they've had. But handwriting automaticity develops on a known trajectory, and knowing where a student sits on that trajectory is where professional judgment earns its keep.

The tension, named: a parent requesting an FIIE for a kindergartner whose letters are still inconsistent isn't asking an unreasonable question. The evaluation just can't yet answer it the way a later evaluation could β€” letter formation is still developmentally in flux at that age β€” and saying so honestly, in the report, is more useful to the family than either refusing the request or forcing a premature determination.

What research supports: the developmental writing trajectory

Wolf & Berninger (2018) trace transcription from Imitation (PK–1st) through Graphic Presentation (K–2nd) and Progressive Incorporation (2nd–4th) before Automatization is expected around 4th–7th grade. Letter reversals and inconsistent formation are typical, not concerning, in the earlier stages.

What's harder to demonstrate: the "unexpected" pattern

A dysgraphia determination rests on showing a weakness that's unexpected relative to age, ability, and instruction. A kindergartner in the Graphic Presentation stage hasn't had the instructional exposure yet to be unexpectedly behind the automaticity checkpoint β€” the instrument is being asked a question the timeline hasn't caught up to yet.

Where the automatization checkpoint lands

Grade 4 is the critical checkpoint: legible letters produced automatically, freeing working memory for composition. A student who hasn't reached automatization by then has a persistent transcription deficit that will constrain composition quality through middle and high school β€” that's the point at which a "still developing" read becomes harder to sustain.

The professionally defensible middle path

Honor the request. Conduct the evaluation. Weight observational and dynamic-assessment data (grip, formation, copy-vs-dictation) more heavily than norm-referenced discrepancy measures at very young ages, and say plainly in the report what the data can and can't establish yet β€” including whether continued monitoring, rather than an eligibility determination either way, is the most honest recommendation.

Language for the parent conversation

"I want to test what we can meaningfully test right now, rather than run measures built for a child who's had years of handwriting instruction your child hasn't had yet."
Frames the limitation as methodological, not a refusal β€” you're not saying no, you're saying what the tool can and can't tell you at this point.
"Some letter reversals and inconsistent formation are typical at this stage β€” that's different from a full dysgraphia determination, and I'll be clear in the report about which one we're able to answer."
Validates the parent's concern while separating a developmentally typical pattern from a premature diagnostic claim.
"If the picture is unclear at this age, the recommendation may be continued monitoring rather than a yes-or-no answer β€” that's not the evaluation failing, that's an honest reading of where your child is on the writing trajectory."
Sets the expectation that "inconclusive at this age" is a legitimate, defensible outcome β€” not a dodge.
